A Planned Steel Town

Fairfield was founded in 1910, with former President Theodore Roosevelt as the featured speaker at the dedication. It was first named Corey, after the president of U.S. Steel, and later renamed for Fairfield, Connecticut. The Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company planned it as a model city to house workers at the Fairfield Works plant, now owned by U.S. Steel. The city incorporated in 1919.
