From Grist Mill to Planned Village

Warren Truss built a grist mill on the Cahaba River here in 1821, and the area stayed agricultural until the Alabama-Chattanooga Railway came through after the Civil War. Much of Trussville's later growth came from the Cahaba Project, a 1930s planned community built by the federal Resettlement Administration. Landscape architect W. H. Kestler laid out homes on half-acre to three-quarter-acre lots around a central green called "The Mall," and 243 single-family houses and 44 duplexes were built. The city reincorporated in 1947.

Two Kinds of Trussville Fence Projects

In the older Cahaba Project neighborhoods

Larger lots around The Mall and nearby streets often have older fences that need replacing. Homeowners here tend to want fences that fit the historic, open feel of the neighborhood: low picket or ornamental fences in front, and privacy fences only in back.

In newer subdivisions

Newer neighborhoods typically ask for six-foot privacy fences, pool fences, and matching gates, often in wood or vinyl fences. Many have HOA guidelines on height, style, and color, so we check them before we finalize a design.

Near the Cahaba River

Low ground near the Cahaba River and its creeks can hold water, and lots in a mapped floodplain may have stricter rules for fences. We set posts in drained holes and check flood-zone status before building.

Permits

Trussville is its own city, so fence permits and height limits come from the City of Trussville. Parts of the city are in St. Clair County, but the city's own rules apply inside city limits. We confirm the details and call 811 before digging.
