From Jugtown to Gardendale

A farm settlement grew up near present-day Gardendale around 1825, and for years the community was known as Jugtown, after a large jug and churn factory. A local schoolteacher, Hettie Thomason Cargo, led the campaign to rename it, and Gardendale was chosen in 1906. The city incorporated in 1955 and has since grown well past its original 18 square miles, reaching about 25 square miles after annexing land from Mt. Olive and other unincorporated areas.

Why Gardendale Fences Look Different

Because the city has grown outward into former rural land, lot sizes vary a lot here. That shows up in the fences people ask us for.

On subdivision lots: - Six-foot privacy fences in wood or vinyl - Black aluminum around pools and front yards - Gates wide enough for a riding mower

On larger, more rural lots: - Long runs of field fencing or wood rail fences - Chain link for dog runs and gardens - Double drive gates across a driveway

Long Fence Runs Take Planning

A fence that runs hundreds of feet along a property line needs a straight layout, consistent post spacing, and corner and gate posts braced to handle the tension. We mark property pins, plan around trees and slopes, and call 811 before any digging.

Permits

Gardendale has its own city rules for fences, and newer subdivisions may have HOA guidelines too. We check both before your fence is scheduled.
