Fence Removal in Birmingham, AL

Birmingham Fence Pros removes old fences across Birmingham, whether it's a storm-damaged wood fence, rusted chain link that came with the house, or a line of posts that has to go before a new fence goes up. We tear it out, pull the posts, deal with the old concrete, and haul everything away.

Fence Removal in Birmingham, AL

Fences We Take Out

  • Wood privacy and picket fences, including rotted and storm-damaged sections
  • Chain link, with its posts, top rail, and tension wire
  • Vinyl and aluminum fences
  • Steel and old wrought iron
  • Barbed wire, field fence, and old farm fencing on larger lots
  • Fence posts left behind after an old fence fell or was partly removed

How Removal Works

Walk the line

We look at the fence, the posts, what they're set in, the slope, and how close the fence runs to trees, beds, sheds, and the neighbor's yard. Access matters too: narrow side yards on older city lots mean more hand carrying.

Mark utilities

Pulling posts disturbs the ground, so buried lines get marked through Alabama 811 before we dig out footings.

Take down panels and rails

Boards, pickets, and panels come off first. Chain link fabric gets unrolled, cut into manageable sections, and rolled up.

Pull the posts

This is the hard part. Posts set in concrete come out with a post puller or by digging around the footing. In Birmingham's red clay, old footings can grip hard, and on rocky ridges some posts were set into holes chipped through chert or sandstone. We remove the whole footing when a new fence is going in the same spot, so new posts can go deep.

Haul away and clean up

Wood, metal, vinyl, and concrete get loaded and hauled off. Metal goes to scrap recycling where possible. Post holes get backfilled and the fence line is raked clean.

Removing a Fence Before a New One

Most of our removal jobs are the first day of a replacement. Doing both together saves you scheduling two crews and lets us plan the new post layout around the old holes. New posts usually go beside the old holes rather than in them, so they sit in solid, undisturbed soil. See wood fences and privacy fences for replacement options.

Storm-Damaged Fences

Birmingham's spring and fall storms knock down a lot of fences. When a tree or wind takes out a fence, the first job is clearing the damaged sections safely, especially if there are pets that need to be kept in. We can remove the damaged part and either repair the rest or replace the whole run. See fence repair.

Shared Fences and Property Lines

If the fence sits on or near a property line, it may belong to you, your neighbor, or both. Before removing a shared fence, it's worth talking to the neighbor and, if the line is unclear, checking a survey. Our fence permits guide has more on property lines.

What Removal Costs Depend On

  • Length of the fence and the material
  • Whether posts are set in concrete
  • Access for equipment and hauling
  • Slope and rock
  • Disposal of concrete footings

Questions

Common Questions

Do you remove the concrete around old fence posts?

Yes. Footings come out with the posts and get hauled away, and the holes are backfilled.

Can you remove just part of a fence?

Yes. We can remove damaged sections and leave the rest, or take out one side of a yard before a new fence goes in.

Do I need a permit to remove a fence in Birmingham?

Removal by itself is usually simple, but a new fence in Birmingham needs a fence permit. We handle that when removal is part of a replacement.

Can you remove a fence that's tangled in trees or vines?

Yes. Vines and small growth get cut back as we go. Large trees growing into a fence take more care, and we'll talk through options before cutting anything big.
